Lead Systems Designer Mitch Ferguson at IGN Vault!

May 19, 2009 —

Carbine Studios Lead System Designer Mitch Ferguson met with our friend Marissa "Trinity Divine" Monera from IGN's Vault Network during this year's LOGIN conference in Seattle, Washington. Click through for a sample of the interview you'll find at the link!

blockquote>Marissa: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do for Carbine?

Mitch: I've had three positions with Carbine. I was hired as an engineer but I wasn't one for very long before I felt that the company needed some help getting organized. So I volunteered to become a producer. This meant helping the engineers and the designers, making sure that everyone was making the same game. Once we got that going pretty well, I switched again to being a lead system designer. As a lead system designer, my job is to explicitly define the big features in the game like combat, tradeskills, housing - stuff like that.

I've hired a bunch of system designers to work with me and I've got some great people. We have the guy who designed the trading card game for Vanguard, which is one of the most popular features of the game. We have the guy who spawned most of the original creatures in WoW - he's in charge of designing our items and NPCs. And then we have a couple of really hardcore PvP guys that are both highly rated PvPers in WoW and other games. I really feel like I have a crackerjack team.
